Despite the fact that most students and staff are enjoying the exhibition and are engaging intelligently with the diversity of viewpoints expressed, the University has apparently over-reacted to one or two complaints by censoring artworks. We at Redhawk Logistica appeal for the debate to move beyond the limits of political correctness and for the ability of visitors to make up their own minds – once they have seen the full exhibition. On a cold January day in Bradford City Centre a small team assembled to help produce Redhawk Logistica”s latest urban intervention. For this installment of the ongoing Message Boards project a new set of four placards have been created, using the language of the High St, to introduce subliminal messages to local citizens. The covert operation ducked local by-laws and dodged CCTV cameras to bring some pause for thought, a few moments of amusement and occasional episodes of bemusement, to the city”s shopping areas.
The project demonstrates the individual”s ability to compete with the biggest corporate brands for prime “advertising” space. It reflects how deeply some of the colours and typefaces adopted by popular corporations are engrained within our collective consciousness. And it offers a sense of the endangered nature of the individual”s voice, when these placards are viewed against the unrelenting backdrop of commercial visual cues we are so used to seeing. Photographs of the Bradford intervention will be in “Protest; Fight the Power” due to tour shortly to the University of Bradford in Gallery II. Presented as a seven metre long paste-up, they will be seen within a fascinating context of campaign posters and artist”s responses to political struggles. Carey Young is something of an anomaly amongst contemporary artists from her generation, judging by her latest exhibition. In these historic times of public sector cuts with stealthy privatisation and increasing corporate intrusion into our lives, she seems to be almost alone in making work that engages with these issues. The show takes key artworks from the last ten years and presents an accessible, but complex, body of work about subjects that we are all surprisingly literate about; call centre’s scripted transactions, catchy advertising slogans, ‘professional’ presentation techniques, disclaimers and contracts.
The artist reflects an ambiguous and nuanced relationship with our over-corporatised world, though at heart she is clearly concerned by the implications of our apparent wholesale acceptance of it. She talks about the fact that we have shifted from being referred to as ‘citizens’ and are now routinely described as ‘consumers’, for example. There is also a personal and vulnerable side in the work that is not always apparent in documentation and this is captured in her video piece ‘I am a Revolutionary’ (2001) where she attempts to deliver the title line with conviction. She is aided by a speech trainer whose regular work is helping business people and politicians sound credible when they are delivering messages that may be hard to believe.

Part of the landscape of Birmingham for the last 100 years, Moseley Road Baths are slowly crumbling apart. Redhawk Logistica joined the Friends of Moseley Road baths and members of the public on Saturday 30th November for a tour of the building, including areas that are not usually accessible. Visitors could walk round the ’slipper baths’ (public bath tubs in small tiled rooms, still in use six years ago), go into the boiler room where the hatch to the original well is visible and climb up into the roof space to see the massive cast iron water tank. It was also an interesting lesson in how class and gender divisions were still strictly enforced until relatively recently. There were First and Second class sections for men, each with different levels of ‘privelliges’, women had a separate entrance and segregated facilities.
Represented at the event was a delegation from Manchester’s Victoria Baths, who won BBC TV’s Restoration award in 2003. Despite securing funding to restore their building, comparable to Moseley Road baths in grandeur and significance, there are still no swimmers in their pools, although they have managed to bring the building back into use and restored some of it to it’s former glory. They warned that Moseley Road Baths need urgent work to halt the deterioration that is being allowed to set in, if restoration is to remain viable.
The annual event is part of a long running campaign to get Moseley Road Baths looked after properly and fully functioning again. Despite appearing like a condemned building from some angles, it is open for business, although only the small pool is currently in use, the main one being dry and accumulating debris (having closed in 2003). What future does a building like this have in the current climate of cuts and asset disposal? Although it is one of the best examples of its kind in the country and would require ‘only’ an estimated £10-20 million to restore (a tiny amount in the context of some of the major capital schemes currently going forward in Birmingham), it’s future seems shamefully precarious.
Redhawk Logistica, for the first time is exhibiting work from our Message Boards and TXT Messages projects, presented as large scale “billboard” style prints. They will bring a contemporary and local dimension to this exhibition called Protest: Fight the Power: Twenty Years of the Political Poster (curated by Scholars and Warriors). The exhibition is being staged by Punch Records, marks the start of their BASS Festival (British Arts and Street Sounds) and runs from Wednesday 2nd June until Saturday 26th June at the newly re-furbished Devonshire House, part of the Custard Factory complex in Birmingham.

Leaving the city centre behind you can see the geometric shapes of the CUBE building at the Mailbox – and some of our ever popular canalside living apartments. Literally minutes later we are in a sunny, woodland paradise, with trees reflected in the water and bridges framing the views. Passing through the brick lined portal that is Edgbaston Tunnel (50 odd metres long) there are lots of hard packed paths to get some speed up on and the whole route is punctuated by some cute bridges that are reminiscent of a more rural past. The railway line runs parallel for much of the way and occasionally the more modest pace of the towpaths is interrupted by a train whooshing past. Near Birmingham University are some major engineering works taking place, we stopped and talked to and ‘old boy’ who was obviously keeping track of progress and he explained to us what was going on and that it was part of the Selly Oak bypass scheme. Currently there is a temporary canal diversion that brings a feel of heavy industry to the scene at this point.
Approaching Selly Oak are some old school graffiti walls which seem to complement perfectly the urban architectural spaces of the canals – remnants of another sub-culture to be found under the city’s streets. At Bournville Station is another example of canal art, a decorative archway, flanked by the canal on one side and the railway on the other, with pylons and bare tree tops to complete the scene. At Stirchley we leave the cut and pick up the River Rea, following this modest water course through a green corridor until it brings us out into the Brummie Mecca on any sunny day, Cannon Hill Park with its shady trees and grassy expanses.
